The energy crops can represent an alternative to some of the most important problems of the traditional agriculture in Spain as well as a significant source of endogenous energy.

Among the advantages can be cited the following:

1 || Reducing the fossil fuels dependence:

The energy crops is the source of biomass with bigger potential and the only that can be planned and specialized for the production of energy.

They significantly can contribute to secure the sustainable biomass supply, the most important problem posing the commercial implementation of biomass today.

2 || Environmental advantages:

The biomass energy use and in particular the biomass from energy crops, produce a reduction of most of the greenhouse gas emissions caused by the fossil fuels, thus being a relevant strategy to comply with the Kyoto protocol.

The substitution of traditional agricultural crops by energy crops can significantly reduce the fertilizers, pesticides and water requirements, therefore being an important alternative to improve the sustainability of the agrarian production.

Moreover, the energy crops can be introduced in alternance with the traditional crops, often contributing to reduce the environmental impact of these, particularly the fertilizer requirements.

3 || Economic and social advantages:

The energy crops can be an opportunity for farmers to utilize non profitable agricultural and forest lands, as well as for diversification of the agrarian production, thus contributing to increase their income.

The use of energy crops biomass can generate one direct employment per 600-800 ton of dry primary biomass, more of 80% of this employment in the agrarian sector.
